TL;DR
The robot taxi is no longer a demo. Waymo, Alphabet's self-driving unit, sells rides with nobody in the driver's seat in 15 American metros, with a fleet of more than 4,000 cars, and now picks people up at six major airports. A report Waymo would not confirm says it plans 20,000 cars by the end of 2027, five times today's fleet, and the company has the money in hand to try. If that happens, a driverless ride stops being a novelty in a few neighborhoods and becomes an ordinary way to get across most of a big American city, with Madrid, Tokyo and Toronto next. The limit now is how fast it can get cars, not whether the software can drive.
